Hello, I am talking from Brazil South America. First I'd like to congratulate this great site, full of good information. Well, I have been doing OL about three years, and during this time, lot of research about training I have made myself. Today I can say that lots of exercises are a waste of time, of course that a novice must use a big arsenal os exercises for improve techinical lifting, basic strenght, flexibility, hypertrothy, muscle balance and eliminate weak points. But at the time when we are doing the snatch and clean & jerk with decent form, we must do this lifts for get strong. I remember when I spent two weeks doing lifts from the hang and form blocks with great frequency and intensity, after that two weeks I decide to make a max for the snatch an C & J, The result was weak numbers of my max that day. This is not the whole truth. This depends highly on how often you train. If you train very often then you have to have many exercises to select from which are as similiar as possible to the main exercises (clean + jerk and snatch) to prevent early nervous system fatigueness. The Bulgarians for example only did c+j, snatch and front squats. If you train every day and practically the whole day this will lead to fast nerous system fatigueness. This expresses itself for example in an aversion to actually lift the bar. In this case a break is mandatory. If you have many exercises to choose from you do not get such early fatigueness due to new stimuli from new exercies. Here the power snatch, power clean etc. are valuable replecements of the classic lifts. If you do not train that often then your vervous system has enough time to recover and you can maybe get along with only c+j and snatches and squats. From my personal experience I never was weaker after doing power snatches oder power cleans or any other supplementary exercise instead of the classical ones. This would also depend on your exerpience as a lifter. If you are relatively new, then the snatch and c+j are all you need. If you are more experienced you have to use more tricks.
